Ceramic Tile Exports: 1.646 billion USD, down 21.05% Year-on-year

From January to June 2020, China’s ceramic tile export value totaled 1.646 billion USD, a decrease of 21.05% from the 2.085 billion USD compared to the same period in 2019. The export volume amounted to 252 million square meters, and the average export price is 0.368 USD/kg as well as 6.526 USD/square meter.

From January to May, due to the Spring Festival and global emergency of COVID-19, China's ceramic tile exports experienced a drop, while in June, it achieved positive growth for the first time in 2020.

In particular, in spite of the impact of COVID-19, exports to Hong Kong, South Korea, Myanmar, and Iraq achieved positive growth, while most other destinations were on a downward trend. Attributed to the introduction of countervailing and anti-dumping duties on ceramic tiles exported to the USA from China, the total value of export to USA saw a significant decline of 86.18% from the same period in 2019. The trade conflict between the two countries in recent years leads to the slump of the exports of China’s ceramic tiles.

From January to June 2020, the export value of ceramic tiles in Fujian, Shandong, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hebei and other provinces in China saw an increase. Among them, the growth rates of Zhejiang and Hebei reached over 100%. In comparison, as a major exporter of ceramic tiles, Guangdong saw a drop of export value by as much as 38.30%.

China’s exports of ceramic sanitary ware to western developed countries are showing a downward trend, while developing countries in Africa and Southeast Asia saw a small growth.

The total value of ceramic sanitary ware exported to western countries such as USA, Canada, Mexico, UK, Germany, France, etc., fell by 0.19 % from 1.19 billion USD in the first half of 2019 to 960 million USD of the same period in 2020. With the aggravating trade conflict between China and USA, the export to western developed countries has been limited. Meanwhile, the impact of COVID-19 on export of developed countries is also considerable.

From January to June 2020, the value of ceramic sanitary ware exported to Algeria, Ghana,   and other countries in South Africa totaled 270 million USD, a year-on-year increase of 0.28%, which is attributable to the product mix optimizaiton and the implementation of the national strategy "Belt and Road Initiative".

In the first half of 2020, exports to countries in Southeast Asia such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Philippines, etc., amounted to 820 million USD, up 0.025% compared to 800 million USD in 2019.

In terms of provinces in China, the top 3 exporters of ceramic sanitary ware are Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi, with the export values of 863.7 million, 526.8 million, and 316.2 million USD respectively.

In the first half of 2020, the characteristics of China's exports of ceramic sanitary ware are as follows.

First, achievements have been made while challenges are emerging. It is inspiriting that China's economy is recovering due to the effective policies and the people’s initiative in fighting COVID-19. However, the pandemic is still spreading around the world, which leads to foreign trade companies’ difficulties in doing businesses in both domestic and foreign markets.

Second, because of the aggravating trade conflict between China and USA, some Chinese companies relocated their factories to Southeast Asia, Africa and other regions, which also results in the continued decline of ceramic sanitary ware exports.

Third, with the acceleration of the upgrade of the ceramic sanitary ware industry, the optimization of the product mix, and high-end products becoming the main products in exports, the gap with the major players of ceramic sanitary ware in western developed countries is gradually narrowed.

Fourth, there is no major change in the share pattern of export destinations, and more than 60% of the exports are to developed countries.

Finally, China still ranks the first place in export volume of ceramic sanitary ware.

This is the 401th issue.
